Paul Hetland of Mt. Vernon, S.D. says that before he grows his corn, he'll plant radishes on his farmland for a number of beneficial reasons. He explains that the roots of a planted radish will run deep and break up the soil which allows for better water absorption. Paul also says that he'll leave the radishes there for the soil to use for nutrients and that radishes are often used as a cover crop. This cycle of enriching the soil to prepare for a bountiful future harvest is just one of the ways he's working towards sustainability.
