In the near future, in the midst of a social movement decrying the exploitation of sentient A.I., grieving widower William is assigned an artificial human companion programmed to behave like his late wife. Meredith is sweet and servile to William until her programming is tampered with by a mysterious organization with ties to her past -- a past that shouldn't exist if she was always a companion. When hacks into her dreams dislodge memories of a past life and unexpected connections with people William considers enemies, Meredith begins to see her reality with new eyes.
