A young boy is shopping for running shoes and healthy food at Walmart. He is working out, eating right and checking out his muscles in the mirror. We see he is heading back to school, and marching band auditions are being held. His mom proudly looks on as he carries his large tuba onto the field. Looks like his hard work paid off.
iSpot Review - August 21, 2015
Back-to-school commercials are usually generic, looking
somewhat similar to a digital billboard that advertises products. But Walmart
decided to take their Back-to-School commercial in a new direction to reach out
to a different demographic, and it pays off well.
The beginning of this 30-second inspiring ad shows a young
boy shopping at Walmart. He picks up some new shoes, a bike and a lot of food.
Viewers are then treated to a short montage of the same young boy eating extra
servings, riding his bike uphill and working out wherever he can, using
whatever he can. He even checks the progress of his biceps in the mirror. When
school finally starts and the young boy begins attending, the scene quickly
shifts from school to practice field. The young boy's proud mom looks on as her
son takes to the football field with a large sousaphone in his hands.
There's already an abundance of ads depicting athletes
working hard, sweating and getting ready for the upcoming season. Walmart
could've easily made this commercial for young kids looking forward to growing
up a bit more, the possibilities are endless with back to school ads. Instead,
Walmart focuses on a different direction with this ad and is able to
successfully reach out to the demographic of school kids who aren't enrolled in
athletics. This commercial should also be pleasing to parents with children
already in marching bands, and that you don't need to play football to be on
the football field.
