In early 1980's New York, a boy watches his loved ones interact with "the American Dream" and all its intricate contradictions. After an harmless incident with a Black friend at school spooks his parents, Paul is sent away to a private institution with a wildly different outlook on the world than he's used to. Unsure of what to do when he sees unfair treatment of his friend, Paul struggles to reconcile conflicting advice from his pragmatic parents, who have accepted the privileges they have access to as a fact of life, and his idealistic grandfather, who recognizes shades of the tragedy the family came to America to escape.
